Example Walks

The Cheviot, via The Hen Hole, Braydon Crag & Bizzle Burn

Route Overview

  • A much more interesting way of summitting Northumberland's highest hill than the usual path up Scald Hill.  Bring swimming gear if you fancy a wild swim!
  • We would park at Mounthooly at the far end of the wonderful College Valley, then head towards the Hen Hole on the west side of The Cheviot.
  • We would follow The College Burn up The Hen Hole stopping at the various waterfalls and pools if you wish.  Lunch would probably be at the furthest pool before the scramble up to Auchope Cairn.
  • We would than make our way to the summit cairn and then take a bearing off towards Braydon Crag.
  • At Braydon Crag we would look for the remains of the Flying Fortress that crashed in 1944 here and I'd tell you the story around the accident.
  • We would then make our way down the steep descent of Bizzle Crags & The Bizzle Burn to the Lambden Valley and back to Mounthooly.
