Cheviot Crash Site - 19th April 25
A fantastic hike over The Cheviot via The Hen Hole to the B17 Flying Fortress plane wreck site. The Hen Hole is a series of waterfalls on the west side of Northumberland's highest peak which offers lots of pools to take dip in if you fancy it!
From the summit, we take a bearing over to West Hill (it's a 45 minute hike over peat bogs mind!) to find the wreckage of the B17 Flying Fortress which in crashed in 1944, narrowly missing Braydon Crag. Learn about the story of the plane crash, the rescue, Sheila the sheepdog and one survivors final wish.
I would rate this hike as intermediate. The final push from the Hen Hole up to Auchope Cairn is quite steep, but not too long. The hike from the summit of Cheviot over to the plane is over peat hags and tussocks. There is quite a steep descent too with no obvious path. The total length is around 6.5 miles with 1800ft of ascent.
A two course lunch prepared over a wood fired stove is included, along with further refreshments (including my famous crème brulee!) back at the van later. I would arrange dietary and allergy requirements in advance by email. All diets catered for.
This expedition will only take place with a minimum of 4 guests. The maximum group size would be 8.
The meeting place would be 09.30 at Hethpool car park in the College Valley. We would then drive (in one/two vehicles) along the private valley to Mounthooly where we will park.
