Activity details

Often regarded as one of the finest walks in Northumberland, this superb route begins at Barrowburn, tucked deep into the wild beauty of Coquetdale. From here we follow The Street, an ancient drovers’ route, climbing steadily up onto the Border Ridge.

Once on the ridge, and weather permitting, we’re rewarded with expansive views north into Scotland and south across the rolling hills of Northumberland. We then follow the Border Ridge and Pennine Way towards Windy Gyle, standing proudly on the England/Scotland border.

From Windy Gyle we descend towards Uswayford before looping back over Middle Hill, completing a classic high-level circuit and returning to Barrowburn. This walk perfectly captures the scale, history, and quiet drama of this remote corner of the Cheviots.
